So I figured I would talk about how much food I bought for the first 5 days and where I went the first trip and how much it cost me. This is always an excuse that I hear from people talking about wanting to eat healthier foods but it really is affordable. My first trip was Safeway but I will be going to Savemart, Trader Joe's, farmers markets and maybe Nob Hill. I think Trader Joe's and farmers markets will probably be the most affordable. Anyways I will list what I bought and how much I spent total.
Safeway:
Peppermint herbal tea $5.49
Organic balsamic vinegar $5.59
Organic honey $6.29
2 Vegetable broths $6.00
Frozen mango chunks $4.49
5 green apples $3.90
6 cucumbers $4.74
3 zucchini $2.13
Celery $1.99
Red onion $0.61
3 Organic avocados $3.00
3 Asian pears $5.97
Red cabbage $4.80
Garlic $0.79
2 Ginger root $0.90
6 Tomatoes $5.73
Acorn squash $1.65
Butternut squash $1.87
2 Sweet potatoes $1.91
2 bunches cilantro $0.67
Italian parsley $1.49
6 organic bananas $3.11
Organic broccoli $3.99
Organic spinach $2.99
Organic chard $2.19
3 bunches organic kale $5.97
Organic leeks $5.43
2 portabello mushroom tops $3.99
4 bags large carrots $7.16
Raisins $4.99
3 organic romaine hearts $3.00
Organic mixed baby greens $3.99
10 organic red apples $5.00
Organic fresh sage $1.99
16oz coconut water $3.99
8 organic lemons $3.89
That is 5 days worth of food for a total of $131.69, not including tax.
So that is a lot cheaper than what I would spend before. BUT I think I can get this all for even cheaper like I said at Trader Joe's or farmers markets. I want to get mostly organic so sometimes farmers markets aren't that reliable where I am for that but Trader Joe's is mostly organic so I will be going there next. This is also just for me, I have a family of 5 so if my husband was doing this too double the price but still $260 is still less than what I would spent generally on groceries. Meat is a huge cost which I am not buying right now, other than frozen chicken tenderloins which are not very much money. Just all the packaged foods I was buying added up so fast and they aren't even good for you so ya see where I am going with this. I have not had to open a package or use a microwave in 2.5 days, its kinda cool! I may even get rid of the microwave or get a really small one for the kids oatmeal and thangs.
Well I hope this helps someone, I know what I think is not much money might look like a lot to someone else, but that's why I am going to try to find cheaper ways of doing this and you do not have to do organic, but I just prefer it for various reasons. Oh and I am not even going to bother going to Whole foods because their prices are just dumb lol! Its a rich person health food store. The only time I shop there is for special items I can't find anywhere else. And I also live in California which I know is generally more expensive than other states so keep that in mind as well.
